Leaders Join Forces to Help Achieve UN Goal for Malaria Prevention
Dozens of African leaders met today in Ethiopia to tackle the challenges facing the continent in the effort to meet the United Nations target of ensuring universal access to malaria control measures by the end of this year. Some 26 heads of State convened the first working session of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) during the annual African Union summit, in Addis Ababa.

Somalia Pirates Release Greek Cargo Ship
Pirates in Somalia have released the Greek-owned cargo ship Filitsa and its crew of 22 after a ransom was paid, Greek officials said. The crew of three Greek officers and 19 Filipino sailors are reported to be in good condition. The vessel was seized off the Seychelles on 11 November as it carried chemicals to South Africa. Southern Sudan Says Vote on Independence is Off-Limits for United Nations
MALAKAL, SUDAN -- A surprise intervention in Sudan by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has drawn warnings from senior officials here, who say any outside efforts to influence a referendum on independence next year could lead to further conflict.

Africa Mulls Resettling Haitians
The African Union has agreed to consider a proposal to resettle thousands of Haitians left homeless by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, and possibly create a state for them in Africa. The idea was suggested by Abdoulaye Wade, the Senegalese president, who said that the history of Haitians as descendants of African slaves gave them the right to a new life on the continent.
